The superpower of humanity

Humans are capable of doing many bad things, but the thing that is less newsworthy, that is all around us, is just how incredibly caring we are. There is no other animal that can live in such large groups that has the abstract thinking for large scale co-operation. While history (and the present) is notable for wars and violence, the majority of human life takes place in the between times that don’t make the news, when we live peacefully, caring for others.

Caring for others, performing acts of love, and in turn forming connection, is one of the most profoundly meaningful and rewarding things we can do in our lives, but even when caring for my own children I have moments of resentment when the demands are overwhelming. Sometimes all I want is to have time to myself, to clear my head, without a background barrage of demands.

We don’t acknowledge nearly enough just how rewarding caring for other people is. We also don’t acknowledge nearly enough just how hard it is. Caring can be incredibly good for our wellbeing, but it can also be very bad for our health.
